Setting

  • The study took place in the computer labs of secondary schools located in Texas.

Method

  • Ten classes were assigned to the experimental group and nine were assigned to the control group.
  • Experimental group participants spent 8, 55 minute sessions working on 6 lessons in the computer lab that incorporated the use of the Texas Instrument InterActive software to teach quadratic functions.
  • Each lesson was aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards for quadratic functions.
  • Control group participants also received instruction that followed the TEKS standards but they did not have access to the Texas Instrument InterActive software.
  • Students took the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills Exit Level Mathematics Test in order to analyze the effects of the intervention.
  • Experimental group participants also did journaling to describe their experiences using the Texas Instrument InterActive software.

Results

  • Experimental group participants achieved statistically higher math achievement scores than control group participants.
  • Experimental group participants reported that the Texas Instrument InterActive software allowed them to work collaboratively, to better visualize concepts, and to better understand the conceptual relationship between numbers in the equations.
  • The findings provide support for using the Texas Instrument InterActive software to improve the math achievement of low performing high school students.
